Mathis Amougou could be set for a return to AS Saint-Étienne, with the French side reportedly monitoring his situation closely as he struggles for regular minutes at RC Strasbourg.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who rose through Saint-Étienne’s youth academy, has seen his development stall somewhat this season, featuring sparingly despite a promising start to his career.
According to reports, Saint-Étienne have maintained consistent contact with his representatives and are considering a move to bring him back as they continue to build for a return to Ligue 1.
Amougou’s journey has been rapid. After leaving US Torcy, he joined Saint-Étienne’s academy, where he spent three and a half years honing his craft.
His performances there earned him a high-profile transfer to Chelsea FC for a reported fee of €15 million.
However, his stay in England proved brief.
Within months, the central midfielder moved to Strasbourg, signing a long-term deal that runs until June 2030. Despite the stability of that contract, opportunities on the pitch have been limited.
So far this season, Amougou has made nine Ligue 1 appearances, accumulating just 267 minutes of playing time.
While still early in his professional career, the lack of consistent involvement has raised concerns about his development, particularly for a player once viewed as one of the brightest young prospects of Cameroonian descent in European football.
Saint-Étienne, currently competing in Ligue 2, believe Amougou’s profile fits their long-term ambitions.
A potential reunion could offer the midfielder a more prominent role and a platform to rediscover the form that initially attracted attention from top European clubs.
Meanwhile, the French side are preparing for their next league assignment, with a fixture against FC Annecy on the horizon as part of their push to return to the top flight.
On the international stage, Amougou’s future also remains open.
Eligible to represent both Cameroon and France, he has already featured for France at youth level.
In 2022, he earned a call-up from youth coach Jean-Luc Vannuchi and made his debut for the under-16 side in a match against Germany.
Although that remains his only appearance at that level, Amougou continued to impress in subsequent youth categories.
His progress earned him a place in France’s squad for the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
He made a decisive impact during the tournament, scoring in the second minute of France’s group-stage match against South Korea to secure a 1–0 victory and help his team advance to the knockout rounds.
Amougou now faces a critical period in his young career.
A potential return to familiar surroundings at Saint-Étienne could provide the opportunity he needs to regain momentum and continue his development.
