Cameroon hand Ivan Jordan Nana first-team chance after UNIFFAC success

David Pagou has sprung a surprise by calling up Ivan Jordan Nana for Cameroon’s double-header against Namibia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Nana, 19, captained the Cameroon Under-20 side to the UNIFFAC title and has recently joined Al Hilal of Sudan as an attacker. The former Indomables Academie player’s progress has now earned him a place in the senior squad.

Speaking exclusively to Africafoot, Nana reflected on his promotion to the national team and the next stage of his career.

From Under-20 success to the senior squad

The call-up comes shortly after Nana lifted the UNIFFAC trophy with the Under-20 side. Having led the team as captain, he has quickly been given the opportunity to train and compete alongside Cameroon’s senior players.

The move represents a significant step in his development. His rise from the academy system, through the Under-20 team and into the senior set-up, has come in a short period and provides him with an early chance to establish himself at international level.

Nana regards the opportunity as an encouraging sign for his future. The invitation to join Pagou’s squad means he has moved beyond his recent success with the Under-20s and is now being considered for the Lions’ next competitive assignment.

Praise for the Under-20 coaching staff

The young player also expressed his gratitude to the staff who helped him reach this point.

Rather than focusing solely on his own achievements, Nana acknowledged the contribution of the Under-20 coaching team. In particular, he highlighted the role of his coach, who allowed him the freedom to express himself from the flank.

That trust helped Nana develop his game and take on greater responsibility within the team. It also played a part in his appointment as captain and in the side’s UNIFFAC triumph before his senior call-up.

His progress under the Under-20 staff has therefore provided the foundation for his move to Al Hilal and his latest opportunity with Cameroon.

Inspired by Cameroon greats

Nana’s comments also revealed a mature outlook despite his age. He identified Samuel Eto’o, Roger Milla and Rigobert Song as figures who guide and inspire him.

The midfielder sees himself as representing young players from academies who have not always received attention. His own route into the national team has given that ambition added significance.

For Nana, the invitation to face Namibia is not the conclusion of his journey. At 19, he views it as the beginning of a new chapter and an opportunity to build on the UNIFFAC success that first brought him into wider focus.
