Cameroon national football team will face familiar opponents in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after being drawn in Group G alongside Comoros national football team, Namibia national football team and Congo national football team.
The Indomitable Lions enter the qualifiers with varied records against each of their group rivals, including a history of closely contested matches and several memorable encounters from previous continental campaigns.
Among the standout fixtures will be another meeting with Comoros, a side Cameroon have never lost to in competitive football.
The most notable clash between the two nations came during the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations, when Cameroon secured a narrow 2-1 victory in the round of 16. That result continued an unbeaten sequence against the Coelacanths stretching across three previous encounters.
Their first meeting ended in a 1-1 draw during AFCON qualifying on 9 August 2018 before Cameroon recorded a 3-0 victory in another qualifier on 23 March 2019.
Cameroon’s recent history against Namibia has been far more balanced.
The two sides met four times during qualification campaigns for the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, producing one victory each alongside two draws.
Cameroon were held to a 1-1 draw on 24 March 2023 before Namibia responded with a 2-1 win four days later.
The Indomitable Lions later edged a 1-0 victory on 7 September 2024, while the most recent encounter between the nations ended goalless on 13 November 2024.
Those results suggest Namibia could provide one of the toughest tests in the group, having already shown their ability to compete evenly with the five-time African champions.
Cameroon’s historical record against Congo is similarly mixed.
Across six previous meetings, Cameroon have won twice, drawn once and lost three times.
The rivalry dates back to African World Cup qualifiers in 1976, when the sides drew 2-2 before Congo claimed a 2-1 victory in the return fixture later that month.
Congo also defeated Cameroon 1-0 during the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations and repeated that scoreline at the 2018 African Nations Championship.
Cameroon’s victories over Congo came in a 2-0 friendly win in 1997 and a 1-0 success during the 2023 African Nations Championship.
The draw sets up a qualification campaign featuring several familiar opponents and renewed regional rivalries as teams compete for a place at the 2027 finals.
The Confederation of African Football marked the occasion with a message posted online alongside the release of the draw.
“Here we are! 🌍
12 groups. One journey to the #TotalEnergiesAFCON2027. Who’s making it?”
Attention will now turn to the start of the qualification matches, with Cameroon aiming to secure another appearance at Africa’s biggest football tournament.
The Indomitable Lions will hope their experience and historical pedigree can guide them safely through Group G, although previous meetings suggest each opponent is capable of posing a serious challenge.
