Cameroon’s battle for promotion to Elite Two, the country’s second-tier championship, has kicked off with a fiercely contested opening round that has immediately thrown up early frontrunners and underlined the high stakes at play.
The national promotion tournament, which brings together the champions of Cameroon’s regional amateur leagues, opened on 20 July 2026 with six matches across two groups. The two eventual finalists will earn coveted places in next season’s Elite Two.
Traditionally limited to 10 regional champions, the 2026 edition features 12 clubs, divided into Groups A and B – a rare expansion that has heightened competition and increased the margin for error.
Strong starts for Mintack and AS Sokoto in Group A
In Group A, Mintack de la Haute Sanaga and AS Sokoto de Kousseri seized the initiative with important victories in their opening fixtures.
Mintack de la Haute Sanaga edged past Riziere FC du Noun 2-1, signalling their determination to push for promotion from the outset. AS Sokoto matched that intent with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Girondin Athletic FC, ensuring both sides took maximum points from day one.
The standout spectacle in the group came from a meeting of two ambitious outfits: Bafmeng United and Mankon United. Their clash produced a dramatic 2-2 draw, underlining just how tight the margins are likely to be in a pool where every point could prove decisive.
After the first round of fixtures, Mintack de la Haute Sanaga and AS Sokoto sit atop Group A with three points apiece, separated only by goal difference, while the remaining sides are already under pressure to respond in their next matches.
ELECSPORT take control of Group B
Group B has an early, clear leader in ELECSPORT Football, who delivered the most convincing result of the opening day. Their 2-0 victory over Kafack Sports Academy not only secured three points but also provided a valuable cushion in goal difference, which could be crucial in such a short, intense competition.
The group’s three other sides were unable to find a breakthrough in tightly balanced encounters. Union Sportive de Douala were held to a 1-1 draw by Hemle de Botko, while Epervier d’Ebolowa and Mintack du Septentrion also shared the spoils in another 1-1 stalemate.
Those results leave ELECSPORT alone at the top of Group B, with the remaining contenders already chasing and fully aware that another slip could seriously damage their hopes of reaching the Elite Two.

With only the finalists ultimately winning promotion, each fixture in this expanded 12-team tournament carries significant weight.
