CAF unanimously backs Infantino ahead of FIFA Congress

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced its unanimous support for the re election of Gianni Infantino as President of FIFA for the 2027–2031 term, following a meeting held in Vancouver, Canada.

The decision was reached on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, during a gathering of CAF Member Associations convened on the eve of the 76th FIFA Congress. The meeting brought together representatives from across African football, all of whom agreed to back Mr Infantino for another term in world football’s top office.

CAF’s endorsement signals a unified stance from the continent’s football leadership at a key moment, just ahead of the global congress where major decisions concerning the governance of the sport are typically discussed.

The announcement confirms that Africa’s football governing body, representing its member associations, has collectively aligned behind the current FIFA president. The agreement was described as unanimous, indicating full consensus among those present at the meeting.

The timing of the decision, immediately before the FIFA Congress, places CAF’s support within a broader international context, as football officials from around the world gather in Vancouver. While the congress itself serves as a platform for global discussions, CAF’s position highlights the continent’s coordinated approach on leadership at FIFA.

No dissenting views were reported from the meeting, underlining the strength of the agreement reached by CAF Member Associations. The endorsement covers the presidential term spanning from 2027 to 2031, pointing to long-term backing rather than a short-term position.

The meeting in Vancouver forms part of a series of engagements linked to the FIFA Congress, an event that draws participation from football bodies worldwide. CAF’s decision therefore contributes to the wider landscape of support that shapes FIFA’s leadership direction.

Although no further details were disclosed about the discussions held during the meeting, the outcome reflects a clear and collective choice by African football authorities. Their backing of Mr Infantino suggests continuity in leadership is a priority for the group.

As preparations continue for the 76th FIFA Congress, CAF’s unified endorsement stands as a notable development, reinforcing the role of regional confederations in influencing decisions at the global level.

The announcement marks a significant moment in the lead-up to the next FIFA presidential cycle, with Africa’s football leadership presenting a consolidated position on the future of the organisation.
