Burkina Faso have qualified for the 2027 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Nigeria 4-1 in the final of the WAFU Zone B tournament in Yamoussoukro.
The victory at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium on Sunday secured the Stallions’ return to the continental competition and means Burkina Faso will join hosts Ghana as representatives of the West African zone.
Ghana had already secured an automatic place in the 2027 U20 Africa Cup of Nations because the country will host the tournament.
Burkina Faso’s emphatic victory over Nigeria completed an impressive campaign and ended the Stallions’ wait for a return to the continental stage. They missed the 2023 and 2025 editions of the U20 AFCON.
The final was dominated by Burkina Faso, who produced a commanding performance to beat the Flying Eagles 4-1 and claim the WAFU B title.
The result also underlined Burkina Faso’s strong form in the region and gave the team considerable momentum ahead of the continental tournament in Ghana.
For Nigeria, the defeat ended their hopes of qualifying through the WAFU B tournament despite reaching the final.
Seven teams took part in the qualifying competition in Yamoussoukro.
Hosts Ivory Coast were joined by Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Togo and Burkina Faso in a tournament that provided a platform for some of West Africa’s emerging young players.
Burkina Faso’s Mohamed Zongo was named the tournament’s best player, while Nigeria’s Adul Adeleke finished as the leading scorer with five goals.
Ghana’s qualification had already been guaranteed before the competition because of its status as host of the 2027 tournament. However, the Black Satellites endured a difficult campaign in Yamoussoukro.
They finished third in Group B behind Burkina Faso and Nigeria and were eliminated before the knockout stage.
Their early exit will nevertheless give Ghana time to prepare for the continental tournament on home soil.
The home advantage could prove significant when the U20 AFCON begins in 2027, with the Black Satellites expected to benefit from the support of their own supporters.
Burkina Faso, meanwhile, will arrive in Ghana as regional champions and with renewed confidence after their convincing victory against Nigeria.
The Stallions’ return is particularly notable given their absence from the previous two editions of the continental competition.
Their 4-1 victory also provides a strong indication of the talent currently emerging from Burkina Faso’s youth football system.
The WAFU B tournament served as an important qualification pathway for the region, with only the winner joining Ghana at the 2027 U20 AFCON.
Burkina Faso took that opportunity decisively, finishing their campaign with a victory that secured both the regional title and their place at the continental finals.
Ghana and Burkina Faso will now turn their attention to the 2027 tournament, where they will compete against the other qualified nations for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations title.
