Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traoré remains without a club with only hours left before the summer transfer window closes in Europe’s major leagues.
The 30-year-old forward has been a free agent since 1 July 2026, following the end of his spell with Sunderland, and has yet to agree a deal for the 2026-27 season.
Traoré’s uncertain club situation comes at an important time for Burkina Faso, with the Stallions preparing to begin their campaign in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers during the September international window.
The former Ajax player left Sunderland after a season affected by injuries and limited playing time.
He joined the English club in September 2025 from Ajax Amsterdam for €2.9m but made only 12 Premier League appearances, scoring once.
Sunderland ultimately decided against exercising their option to sign him permanently.
Traoré has not played a competitive match since March 2026, adding another layer of uncertainty over his next move as the new season approaches.
Despite his lack of a club, the forward remains an important figure for Burkina Faso.
He has made 86 appearances for the national side and scored 21 goals, while continuing to serve as captain of the Stallions.
The timing of his club search is therefore particularly significant, with international football returning in September and Burkina Faso beginning its qualifying campaign for the next AFCON.
A number of clubs have been linked with Traoré in recent months, but none of the reported possibilities has resulted in an official agreement.
Watford, Danish side FC Nordsjælland and former club Ajax have all been mentioned as potential destinations. Traoré has already had two spells with Ajax during his career.
Interest from Saudi Arabian clubs has also been reported, while a more recent rumour has linked him with Juventus.
There have also been suggestions that Traoré could return to France, although no move has materialised so far.
