Bounou expresses pride after Morocco awarded 2025 AFCON title

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has spoken of his happiness after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded the Africa Cup of Nations title to his country, following a decision that came at the expense of Senegal.

The announcement, which emerged after a delay, marks a significant moment for Moroccan football and has prompted an emotional response from Bounou, who was part of the national team during what he described as a challenging period.

Speaking after the decision, Bounou said: “AFCON? Honestly, it’s news that arrived very late, but as a Moroccan and a player of the national team who went through that difficult moment, you can only be happy.”

The goalkeeper’s reaction came shortly after an impressive performance for his club side, Al Hilal, in Saudi Arabia. On the same evening, he played a decisive role in helping his team secure qualification, producing two crucial saves during a penalty shootout.

For Morocco, the awarding of the continental title represents more than simply adding silverware. According to Bounou, it reflects the determination of a squad that endured difficult and, at times, controversial circumstances during the competition.

The goalkeeper indicated that the experience had been testing for those involved, suggesting that the outcome carries emotional weight beyond the sporting result itself.

While CAF’s ruling has brought closure to the situation, it also raises the significance of the team’s journey. Morocco’s players are now recognised as champions.

As Morocco celebrates the decision, the focus remains on what the title represents for the team and its supporters. For Bounou, it is not only a moment of pride but also a reminder of the challenges that were overcome along the way.

The delayed nature of the announcement has not diminished its importance, and for those involved, it serves as confirmation of their efforts during a demanding period.
