Borussia Dortmund held by Werder Bremen as Bayern Munich are handed title race advantage

Borussia Dortmund surrendered a two-goal lead in the closing stages to draw 2-2 with Werder Bremen, giving Bayern Munich the chance to move to the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Dortmund appeared to have secured victory after Daniel Svensson put them ahead in the 80th minute, with Nico Schlotterbeck adding a second five minutes later.

But Werder Bremen launched a late comeback. Ludovit Reis reduced the deficit in the 88th minute before Niclas Fullkrug completed a dramatic equaliser in the second minute of stoppage time.

The result came in the opening match of the fifth round on Friday and ended Dortmund’s hopes of maintaining a clear advantage at the summit. The draw means four goals were scored across the final 12 minutes of the match.

Dortmund had controlled much of the contest, enjoying 69% possession and registering 18 shots, including 11 on target. However, Werder Bremen goalkeeper Karl Hein produced a series of saves to keep his side in the game before the late turnaround.

Dortmund now have 13 points from five matches and remain top of the table for the time being. Bayern Munich are three points behind them with 10 points from four games.

The Bavarian giants will move level on points with Dortmund, and take first place on goal difference, if they beat Augsburg by any score on Saturday evening.

Bayern Munich began the current round with a goal difference of plus 12, compared with Dortmund’s plus seven. The two-goal draw did not alter either figure sufficiently to change that advantage.

Freiburg could also join the leading pair on 10 points. They have collected that total from four matches and face Schalke on Sunday, meaning a victory would take them level with both Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

Werder Bremen’s late recovery lifted them to eight points, leaving them fourth in the table.
