Benin sports leaders back politician Wadagni ahead of crucial April vote

Leading figures in Benin sporting community have publicly backed presidential candidate Romuald Wadagni, highlighting the growing intersection between sports development and national politics ahead of the April 12 election.

A large gathering held at Zongo Square in Parakou on Sunday brought together federation officials, athletes, administrators and supporters in a show of unity and support for the Wadagni-Mariam Chabi Talata ticket.

The event, organised by the National Sports Coalition for Romuald Wadagni (CNSR-Wadagni), was held under the patronage of Benin Football Federation (FBF) president Mathurin De Chacus.

The rally was marked by expressions of gratitude towards current President Patrice Talon, with speakers pointing to reforms implemented during his tenure as a foundation for the country’s sporting progress.

Addressing the gathering, De Chacus stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the management and development of sport in Benin.

“We cannot allow everything that has been built to be jeopardized. Beninese sport needs continuity, stability, and unwavering political will.

“That is why I am telling you clearly: Romuald Wadagni is the ideal man to continue the work begun,” he stated.

His comments reflect a broader concern among stakeholders that progress in infrastructure, organisation and international competitiveness must be sustained through consistent leadership.

De Chacus also underlined Wadagni’s role in recent reforms, presenting him as a candidate familiar with the challenges facing sport in the country.

“Romuald Wadagni is not a stranger to us. He has been at the heart of the major reforms of recent years.

“He knows the issues, he understands the challenges, and he shares the same commitment to excellence as President Talon,” he stated.

The endorsement highlights how sport has become a significant platform for national development across Africa, with federations and athletes increasingly engaging in conversations about governance and policy direction.

In Benin, officials argue that the continuation of current reforms is essential to strengthening the country’s standing on the continental stage.

The event concluded with what organisers described as the “Parakou Appeal”, a call for voters, particularly those within the sporting fraternity, to support the Wadagni-Talata ticket in the upcoming election.

“On April 12th, go and vote massively in favor of the Wadagni-Talata duo. By voting for them, you will be voting for the continuation of sporting excellence and for the preservation of hard-won gains,” De Chacus declared.

He added: “Sport has taught us discipline, fair play and respect for the rules. Let us now show at the ballot box that we know how to defend the interests of our country. Long live Beninese sport and long live Benin.”
