Benin international Abdoul Rachid Moumini has completed a move to Azerbaijani Premier League side Shamakhi FC, ending his short spell with Sumqayıt FK as he embarks on a new challenge in Eastern European football.
The 22-year-old full-back has signed a one-year contract with the option of a further season, giving him the opportunity to continue his development after gaining valuable experience during his first campaign in Azerbaijan.
The transfer marks another important step in the growing presence of African footballers in emerging European leagues, with Moumini aiming to build on the progress he made during his debut season outside Benin.
Shamakhi confirmed the arrival of the Benin international after he left fellow Azerbaijani top-flight side Sumqayıt by mutual agreement, despite initially having a contract that was due to run until 2028.
The move comes just one year after Moumini arrived in Azerbaijan from Beninese club Ayema FC, where he had established himself as one of the country’s promising young defenders.
His transition to European football proved encouraging.
After joining Sumqayıt in July 2025, Moumini adapted quickly to the demands of the Azerbaijani Premier League and became a regular starter during the first half of the campaign.
According to the information provided, the right-back featured in 18 league matches and two domestic cup fixtures, contributing two assists while establishing himself as an important member of the squad.
Those performances demonstrated his ability to adjust to a more competitive environment and strengthened his reputation as one of Benin’s emerging defensive talents.
However, his progress was interrupted during the second half of the season.
An injury kept the defender on the sidelines for an extended period, limiting his appearances and bringing his first season in Azerbaijan to a difficult conclusion.
Despite still having several years remaining on his contract, Sumqayıt announced that both parties had reached an amicable agreement to terminate their collaboration, paving the way for Moumini’s move to another club in the country’s top division.
Rather than leaving Azerbaijan altogether, the Benin international has opted to remain in familiar surroundings by joining Shamakhi FC.
The club has handed the defender a 1+1 contract, guaranteeing him a place in the squad for the upcoming campaign while retaining the option of extending the agreement for another season.
For Shamakhi, Moumini’s arrival adds youth and experience to the defensive line.
Although still only 22, he already possesses experience in both Beninese and Azerbaijani football, while his ability to adapt quickly after arriving in Europe suggests he could become an important player for his new club.
Known for his defensive discipline and maturity, Moumini has earned recognition for performing beyond his years. Those qualities are expected to be valuable as Shamakhi seek to improve their position in Azerbaijan’s top flight.
The transfer also represents another positive development for Beninese football.
In recent years, more players from Benin have secured opportunities abroad, using leagues outside Europe’s traditional powerhouses as platforms to continue their professional growth.
For Moumini, the challenge now is to put an injury-disrupted season behind him and re-establish the consistency that helped him earn a starting place shortly after arriving in Azerbaijan.
