Bayern Munich have held further discussions with representatives of Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, but the German club have yet to make a formal offer for the 16-year-old, according to Sky Sport Germany.
The Bundesliga champions remain interested, but have not taken the next official step in their pursuit of the highly rated attacker. The latest talks strengthened communication between the two sides without producing an agreement or a clear indication that Gabriel is close to moving to Munich.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are currently considered the leading contenders for his signature. Both clubs are pursuing Gabriel persistently and are understood to be able to offer a sporting project that is more attractive to the player at this stage.
The financial cost of any deal is likely to be a significant factor in deciding his next club. Sky Sport Germany reports that the overall fee would be well above the €10m-€15m range, making it a substantial investment even for a player regarded as an exceptional talent.
Interested clubs therefore need to convince Gabriel on sporting grounds while also being prepared to commit considerable funds to his future. That combination is expected to play a decisive role in determining where he continues his development.
Who is JJ Gabriel?
Gabriel turned 16 on 6 October and plays in attack for Manchester United’s academy. He has not yet appeared in a competitive match for the first team, although he did feature in a pre-season friendly against Atletico de Madrid.
In September, Gabriel told Manchester United he wanted to leave and formally asked to terminate his youth contract, which runs until the end of the current season. However, the club are not legally obliged to accept that request.
His decision came days after he scored a hat-trick on his debut in the UEFA Youth League against Azerbaijani side Sabah.
Gabriel had been expected to sign a scholarship agreement with Manchester United when he turned 16, followed by a professional contract at 17. That planned progression now appears unlikely.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed the club’s interest in the teenager in an interview with Bild in September.
“We know the player because he is very, very talented. An exceptional talent. But I cannot say more than that,” Freund said.
