Saturday’s German Super Cup will bring together Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, with the opening whistle scheduled for 21:30 Moscow time. Bayern arrive as the clear favourites after winning both the Bundesliga and the German Cup last season, while Dortmund will look to begin the new campaign by challenging their domestic rivals.
Borussia Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga last term but were unable to mount a serious title challenge. They collected 73 points from 34 matches, ending the campaign 16 points behind Bayern Munich. Dortmund scored 70 goals and conceded 34 during the league season.
Niko Kovac’s side have had a mixed run of results during their preparations for the new campaign. They recorded victories over Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, Arsenal and Tokyo, beating those opponents 3-1, 3-2 and 1-0 respectively. However, Dortmund also suffered defeats by Fortuna, losing 2-1, and Cerezo Osaka, who won 1-0.
Bayern Munich, by contrast, secured the Bundesliga title with 89 points, finishing 16 points clear of their closest challengers. Their domestic success was completed in the German Cup final, where they defeated Stuttgart 3-0.
The Munich club also progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season. Their European campaign ended there, however, after they lost to Paris Saint-Germain on aggregate over two legs.
Vincent Kompany’s team have generally performed strongly in their pre-season fixtures. Bayern began with a 15-0 victory against Rottach-Egern before beating Jeju 2-1, Aston Villa 2-1, RB Leipzig 3-1 and Heidenheim 4-2. Their only preparation defeat came against Wehen, who won 2-1.
The two sides have regularly been involved in high-scoring matches, and the German Super Cup is expected to follow that pattern. The available prediction is for an open contest featuring at least four goals.
The fixture is also an early opportunity for both clubs to make a statement before the competitive season develops. Dortmund will be seeking a result that suggests they can close the gap to the Bundesliga champions, while Bayern will aim to reinforce their status as Germany’s leading side by adding another trophy to last season’s league and cup double.
