Bayern Munich remain interested in Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, but the France international is not currently seeking a move and believes he can regain his place in the starting XI.
The German club could pursue Kounde if they first raise funds through a major sale. Bayern are prepared to allow Kim Min-jae to leave, with the South Korea defender valued at approximately 40 million euros.
Kim is not part of Vincent Kompany’s plans, and Bayern believe this is the right time to sell him. A transfer would provide funds for new signings while also saving the club nearly 8 million euros in annual wages.
Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and AC Milan have shown interest in Kim, although no official offer has yet been submitted. Bayern consider his departure a realistic possibility as they assess options for strengthening their defence.
Kounde remains Barcelona-focused
Bayern’s preferred target is Kounde, whose ability to operate in several defensive positions would suit Kompany’s tactical system. If a deal for the Barcelona player cannot be reached, Benfica’s Tomas Araujo is viewed as a feasible alternative, with a transfer fee of about 35 million euros.
Kounde signed a contract extension with Barcelona until 2030, but his position has become less secure at the beginning of the new season. He has started as a substitute at right-back, while manager Hansi Flick’s confidence in him is understood to have fallen slightly.
That has left open the possibility of a future departure, although Kounde has not indicated that he wants to leave Barcelona.
The defender remains a regular starter at right-back for France, contrasting with his reduced role at club level. His playing time had already declined last season, and he knew before this campaign began that he was likely to receive fewer minutes.
Despite that, Kounde chose to stay because he believes he can eventually win back a starting place. If his situation has not improved by January, his response to a substantial offer is less certain.
Bayern have not contacted Kounde’s representatives and have not made an offer. However, the club has identified him as a potential target and would make a determined attempt to sign him if he became open to a move.
The availability of a defender with Kounde’s qualities is considered a significant opportunity, particularly because players capable of covering multiple defensive roles are uncommon in the transfer market.
Several Premier League clubs are also monitoring his circumstances at Barcelona. They are waiting to establish whether he will decide to seek a transfer.
For now, Kounde’s position remains unchanged. He wants to continue at Barcelona and hopes to secure more playing time after the international break.
