Bayern Munich initially tried to sign Gordon but abandoned the pursuit because of the player’s high price, according to Eberl. The German club instead made Ismael Saibari their preferred target and completed a deal for the forward.
Speaking after the German Cup match, Eberl explained that Gordon had been Bayern Munich’s first option during their search for an attacking player. However, the financial demands involved in the move led the club to change direction.
Saibari subsequently became Bayern Munich’s top candidate, and the club completed his signing after deciding that the transfer represented the more suitable route.
Eberl also said that Bayern Munich’s plans to bring in a forward had been made independently of Jamal Musiala’s situation. The club had already identified the need for another attacking option once Nicolas Jackson’s loan spell came to an end.
That planning meant Bayern Munich’s recruitment process was not dependent on what happened with Musiala. Instead, the German club had already decided that adding a forward would be necessary after Jackson’s temporary spell with the team concluded.
Eberl highlighted Saibari’s versatility as another reason for the decision to pursue him. He said the player is capable of operating on the wing and can also play in four different attacking positions.
That range of roles made Saibari an excellent fit for Bayern Munich, in Eberl’s assessment. His ability to contribute from several areas of the attack was viewed as an important advantage as the club looked to strengthen its forward options.
The move therefore followed two clear considerations: Gordon’s high price made that pursuit difficult, while Saibari offered the positional flexibility Bayern Munich wanted. After initially attempting to sign Gordon, the club switched focus and made Saibari its leading candidate.
Eberl’s comments provide the club’s explanation for the change in direction following the German Cup match. They also clarify that the decision was part of a broader recruitment plan, rather than being determined solely by developments involving Musiala.
Bayern Munich’s priority was to replace the attacking option created by the end of Nicolas Jackson’s loan spell. Saibari’s capacity to play on the wing and in four other attacking roles ultimately helped convince the club that he was the right player to pursue.
