Bastoni rescues Italy with equaliser after France defensive error

Alessandro Bastoni scored for the second time in this season’s Nations League as Italy drew 1-1 with France at the Stade de France on Friday.

The Inter Milan defender levelled in the 68th minute after capitalising on a serious mistake by Lucas Da Cunha, cancelling out Michael Olise’s opener for the hosts.

France had gone ahead 10 minutes after half-time when Olise converted a free-kick routine involving Rayan Cherki. Cherki played the set-piece short and Olise struck a left-footed effort which hit the crossbar before going into the net.

Italy responded 13 minutes later. Lucas Da Cunha failed to control a pass from Adrien Rabiot in an advanced position, allowing Bastoni to win possession and drive towards goal. He advanced into the area before finishing past France goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

The goal continued Bastoni’s productive Nations League campaign. He had also scored Italy’s opening goal against Turkey a few days earlier, when Luciano Spalletti’s side secured a 4-1 victory.

The defender was involved in a late incident at the other end of the pitch when he appeared to bring down Olise inside the penalty area. However, the referee waved play on and no penalty was awarded.

The result leaves France top of Group A with seven points from three matches. Belgium are second on six points, while Italy occupy third place with four points. Turkey remain bottom without a point.

The first half in Paris had ended goalless, with both sides unable to turn their early opportunities into a breakthrough. France eventually found the opening goal through Olise, but Italy’s response ensured the hosts could not maintain their lead.

Bastoni’s equaliser also extended his personal contribution to Italy’s campaign, while France missed the chance to strengthen their position at the top of the group. France, Belgium, Italy and Turkey now remain separated by only seven points in the standings, with Turkey yet to register a result.
