Barcelona transfer talks prompt Rodri’s unusual request to Manchester City

Rodri has asked Manchester City for special permission to delay his return to England while negotiations over a possible move to Barcelona reach their final stages.

There is still no agreement between Barcelona and Manchester City, but all parties hope to settle the remaining issues in the coming days and allow Rodri to move to Spotify Camp Nou.

The midfielder’s holiday was due to end on Thursday, with the player expected to travel to England and report for Manchester City training on Friday morning. However, Spanish newspaper Sport reports that Rodri has requested permission to remain in Spain until the talks between the two clubs have concluded.

Rodri’s intention is to wait for Barcelona and Manchester City to resolve what is described as a small remaining difference in their financial negotiations. If that issue can be settled, he would then be able to begin working under Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick.

The player believes missing one training session could give the clubs additional time to complete the transfer and finalise every detail. However, he will only stay away from Manchester City’s training ground if the club gives him approval.

Should Manchester City refuse the request, Rodri is expected to return to training as scheduled.

Rodri was still in Madrid on Thursday and was seen having a meal at Casa Lampazas. His presence in the Spanish capital comes as Barcelona continue discussions aimed at taking him to Camp Nou.

Manchester City have been told that the player wants clarity over his future before returning to England. Although the transfer is now considered to be approaching its decisive phase, no completed agreement has yet been announced between the clubs.

Enzo Maresca had previously confirmed that Rodri would be in Manchester on Friday. The player is now hoping Manchester City will grant the special permission he has requested, allowing him to remain in Spain while the negotiations continue.

If the request is accepted, Rodri would have more time to wait for the financial gap between Barcelona and Manchester City to be closed. If it is rejected, he will attend the club’s training session and continue preparing with Manchester City until the discussions produce a final outcome.

The situation leaves the midfielder’s immediate schedule dependent on Manchester City’s decision, while Barcelona work to complete a deal that would take him to Spotify Camp Nou and place him under Flick.
