Barcelona widened their search for a central striker after their hopes of signing Julian Alvarez began to fade, and Nicolo Tresoldi has since strengthened the case for why he was considered one of the club’s alternatives.
The Catalan club needed reinforcements in attack following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, with the aim of adding further goalscoring power to their squad. Gabriel Jesus eventually joined Barcelona as a genuine opportunity in the transfer market, but the club assessed several other options during the process.
According to Sport, Tresoldi emerged as one of the more unexpected names linked with Barcelona during the final weeks of the transfer window. The Club Brugge striker had been one of the leading young forwards in the Belgian league last season and finished as his side’s top scorer.
Tresoldi scored 23 goals and provided nine assists last term, figures which highlighted his attacking influence. His contribution was not limited to finishing, however, as he also impressed with his ability to combine with team-mates and link the lines.
That aspect of his game was viewed as particularly compatible with Barcelona’s footballing philosophy. A move for the striker would nevertheless have represented a significant risk, given his limited experience at the highest level.
Tresoldi’s development has continued at pace. After each season, his profile appears to have grown, and his performances suggest he is on course to become an increasingly prominent name among Europe’s emerging talents.
His start to the current campaign has further underlined that progress. Tresoldi has already scored five goals in nine matches for Club Brugge.
He has also continued to make an impression at international level with Germany Under-21s. The striker was called up by Germany Under-21s during the current international break, and his form has reportedly begun to bring him into consideration for upcoming matches involving the senior Germany team under manager Jurgen Klopp.
Tresoldi’s current market value is €25m, according to Transfermarkt. That figure reflects his development and could rise further if he maintains the level he has shown so far.
The Germany striker remains at an important stage of his career, but the direction of travel is clear. His name has already been associated with Barcelona, and his recent performances mean it would not be surprising if he continued to attract attention from some of Europe’s leading clubs.
