Paris Saint-Germain have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, increasing the pressure on Barcelona as they consider whether to pursue a deal for the forward.
Gabriel recently turned 16 and Paris Saint-Germain have opened discussions with his representatives. Real Madrid are also stepping up their efforts, with both clubs making progress in their contacts with the player’s camp, according to Catalan newspaper Sport.
Paris Saint-Germain are looking to take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Gabriel’s future at Old Trafford. The French club are understood to be presenting both an attractive sporting plan and a strong financial proposal as they seek to persuade the player.
Real Madrid are similarly working to improve their position in the contest, leaving Barcelona facing increasingly intense competition for a player regarded as one of Manchester United’s notable young prospects.
Barcelona’s main advantage is believed to be Gabriel’s sporting preference. The teenager is particularly attracted to the Catalan club and its football philosophy, while he is also interested in a project that offers young players opportunities to develop.
That preference, however, does not mean a move to Barcelona is close to being agreed. Financial considerations are expected to play an important role in determining the outcome of the transfer battle.
Barcelona recognise the significant potential of the young forward but do not want to become involved in an auction or pay an excessive fee for a player who has not yet made an official first-team appearance for Manchester United.
The Catalan club’s position is that any agreement must meet its sporting and financial standards. It is therefore relying on the appeal of its football project rather than attempting to compete with every offer that may be made by Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid.
Manchester United still retain the player’s rights and have not abandoned their efforts to resolve his situation. The English club remain involved as the three interested sides assess their next steps.
Sport reports that the growing presence of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid could push up the financial value of the deal. Barcelona, by contrast, are maintaining their emphasis on the strength of their sporting project and are unwilling to exceed their limits simply to win the competition for Gabriel.
