Barcelona are in advanced discussions to play a pre-season friendly in Tangier on 15 August as part of their final preparations for the new campaign.
The Catalan club has confirmed it is working on arranging an exhibition match in the northern Moroccan city against a local side, with only a few logistical details still to be agreed before the game can be officially announced.
The fixture is being scheduled for the same weekend as the opening round of La Liga, but Barcelona will not begin their league season then. Their match against Athletic Bilbao has been postponed because several Barca players are involved in the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.
Head coach Hansi Flick and his staff intend to use the gap in the calendar to stage one last competitive test for the squad before domestic action begins. The aim is to sharpen the fitness and rhythm of established first-team players while continuing to hand minutes to the large group of La Masia youngsters who have been integrated into pre-season.
Tangier lined up as key pre-season stop
If the agreement is completed, Tangier will become the penultimate stop on Barcelona’s summer schedule.
Barca are currently based at St. George’s Park in England for a training camp. Following a series of matches in the UK, they are due to travel to Italy for a triangular tournament against Udinese and Nottingham Forest on 8 August.
The proposed friendly in Morocco would follow that mini-tournament, with Barcelona then expected to return to Spain to host the Trophee Joan Gamper against Al-Ahly on 19 August at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.
Although talks are not yet finalised, the likely opponents in Tangier are Ittihad Tanger, who finished seventh in the Moroccan top flight, the Botola, last season.
Special return for Lamine Yamal
The match would carry particular personal significance for Lamine Yamal, who is expected to feature in the country of his father’s birth. His participation is likely to attract strong local interest as well as attention from Barcelona supporters in Morocco.
The game also forms part of a broader strategy by the club to strengthen its presence in North Africa, a region where Barcelona enjoys substantial support and commercial appeal.
Symbolic setting across the Strait of Gibraltar
Beyond the sporting considerations, the choice of Tangier is seen as highly symbolic.
The city lies directly opposite the south of Spain, separated from Tarifa by only around 15 kilometres of water at the Strait of Gibraltar. Its history, trade and constant movement of people have created deep ties with Spain over many decades, with the local Arabic dialect incorporating notable Spanish influences.
By staging a match in Tangier, Barcelona would be playing in a city long regarded as a bridge between Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula, allowing the club to connect more closely with a passionate fanbase on the southern side of the strait.
