Reports on 20 August describe Martinez as one of the finest number nines in world football. However, Barcelona have currently decided against pursuing a deal for the 28-year-old, who extended his Internazionale contract until 2029.
A transfer appears highly unlikely in the present circumstances. Martinez is regarded as a key figure at Internazionale, where he is captain and one of the club’s most prolific goalscorers. His estimated market value of €85m is not considered excessive for a player of his age and standing, but no agreement is currently close.
Martinez is understood to be content with life at Internazionale and remains grateful for the confidence the club has shown in him throughout his time in Italy. He has scored 175 goals in 376 appearances for the club and played an important part in their most recent Serie A title success.
At Internazionale, there is little expectation that the team’s central figures will leave. Nevertheless, the situation could change if Barcelona were to make a formal offer before the end of the summer window.
Barcelona still searching for attacking cover
Barcelona have not yet secured a replacement for Robert Lewandowski or Ferran Torres in the final stages of the transfer window. Their attempts to sign Julian Alvarez have not been successful, leaving the club without a settled alternative should that move prove impossible.
Martinez would be aware that a move to Barcelona could raise his profile even further in international football. The Argentina forward was not a starter at the last World Cup and did not play a single minute in the final.
Joining Barcelona would offer him the opportunity to compete for major collective honours on an even larger stage. Personal ambitions would also remain part of the picture, including challenging for the Golden Boot and potentially the Ballon d’Or.
Despite those possible benefits, Martinez’s relationship with Internazionale remains strong. He has become a club legend, currently wears the captain’s armband and helped deliver a Serie A title after a convincing campaign. Those factors make a departure difficult to envisage unless Barcelona significantly changes its position.
Internazionale have also continued to strengthen their squad. The club has signed high-calibre players including Dejan Kulusevski, who is at Tottenham, to replace former Real Madrid player Dumfries. They have also brought in recognised names such as Aleksandr Stankovic, now with Club Brugge, Manuel Akanji and John Stones of Manchester City.
For Barcelona, the uncertainty surrounding Julian Alvarez means the need for another attacking option remains. If that transfer cannot be completed, the Catalan club has yet to settle on a clear alternative and will have to examine other possibilities before the window closes.
