Hansi Flick hailed Barcelona’s defensive display after their 3-0 Champions League victory over Aston Villa, describing the clean sheet as the most satisfying aspect of the result.
Barcelona took control at Camp Nou on Tuesday when Lamine Yamal opened the scoring in the seventh minute. The 19-year-old intercepted Joao Gomes’ dangerous pass across his own goal before finishing into the bottom-left corner.
That goal also moved Yamal to the top of the Champions League’s teenage scoring list. His 14 goals in the competition are one more than the previous record of 13, held by Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe.
Barcelona captain Raphinha then settled the match with two goals inside 12 minutes of the second half, but Flick reserved particular praise for his defence.
The clean sheet was Barcelona’s first in the Champions League since their 4-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in April 2025, ending a run of 18 matches without one. They have also won 11 of their past 13 home games in the competition against English clubs, drawing two.
Aston Villa managed nine attempts and recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of just 0.72. Only one of those efforts required a save from Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
“The best thing about the match? The clean sheet. I’m very happy with that because we defended a very good attack like Aston Villa’s,” Flick told reporters.
“Of course, it was important. They are a great team. We defended well, and we were happy with what we saw in defence.
“Everyone gave their maximum to finish with a clean sheet and we scored our goals. We’re pleased.”
Barcelona have scored in 19 of their past 20 home Champions League matches, with that run bringing 65 goals at an average of 3.3 per game. They have also created at least five big chances in each of their past three matches in the competition, a sequence they had not managed since December 2020.
The result equalled Aston Villa’s heaviest defeat in major European competition. They previously lost by three goals to Royal Antwerp in September 1975, going down 4-1, and to Inter in November 1990, losing 3-0, both in the UEFA Cup.
Villa’s opening goal concession followed Gomes’ mistake, contributing to a wider problem for the club. No Premier League side has made more errors leading to goals in all competitions this season than Aston Villa, who have seven, level with Sunderland.
Flick said Barcelona’s high press had been designed to provoke that error.
“This is our idea of how we want to play football,” he said. “We try to press them high, so that they make mistakes. We had this moment, were in the right position, and we pressed them well, and they made this mistake and we used it.”
The Barcelona manager also explained why Rodri was replaced by Marc Bernal at half-time, saying the Spain international had felt a minor muscular problem.
“We took him off at half-time because he felt some muscular pain. It’ll need to wait until Wednesday before we examine that and find out more,” Flick said.
