Ayyoub Bouaddi says he has no regrets over choosing Morocco over France

Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi has reaffirmed his commitment to the Atlas Lions, insisting he has no regrets about choosing Morocco over France after an impressive breakthrough campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 18-year-old established himself as one of Morocco’s standout performers during the tournament, becoming a key figure in Mohamed Ouahbi’s midfield despite previously representing France at every youth level.

Born in France to Moroccan parents, Bouaddi featured 27 times for France’s youth teams and captained the Under-21 side, earning recognition as one of the country’s brightest emerging talents.

France uncertainty influenced decision

Bouaddi ultimately switched his international allegiance after failing to receive assurances from France head coach Didier Deschamps over a place in the senior squad before the World Cup.

Morocco confirmed his international switch just a month before the tournament, handing Ouahbi one of Europe’s most highly rated young midfielders.

Reflecting on the decision after Morocco’s World Cup campaign, the Lille midfielder made it clear he remains convinced he made the right choice.

“No regrets whatsoever.”

“I’m really proud that I chose Morocco.”

Breakthrough on the world stage

Bouaddi justified Morocco’s faith by featuring in all five of the Atlas Lions’ World Cup matches, playing an important role in another memorable campaign for the North African nation.

His performances also saw him enter the history books as the second-youngest player ever to appear in a FIFA World Cup quarter-final, behind only Brazilian legend Pelé.

Although Morocco’s journey ended in the last eight, Bouaddi believes the experience has laid the foundation for future success.

“Whatever happens we will always play for our jersey.”

“We want to make sure that the Moroccan people are proud of us, and we know what we’ll have to do next time to advance even more.”

The teenager’s performances have cemented his status as one of Morocco’s brightest young stars, with the Atlas Lions appearing to have secured a midfielder capable of becoming a cornerstone of the national team for years to come.
