Mikel Arteta decided against pursuing Malick Fofana this summer because of concerns about whether the young winger could cope with the physical demands of the Premier League.
Lyon were prepared to sell the 21-year-old Belgium international to Arsenal for a fee of about €40m, with the player regarded as one of the most promising young wide attackers in European football.
Fofana’s pace and direct style had attracted interest from the Gunners. He is known for his explosive acceleration, ability to carry the ball forward and capacity to create chances, qualities Arsenal were understood to be considering after the departures of Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.
However, according to The Athletic, Arsenal did not complete a deal after Lyon offered them the opportunity to sign Fofana. Sporting director Andrea Berta held discussions with Fofana’s representatives at Roc Nation Sports about a possible transfer.
Arsenal were only willing to consider a loan arrangement, with the club also mindful of the risk of breaching UEFA’s spending limits. The proposed structure meant there was no immediate agreement between the two clubs.
Arteta then raised concerns about Fofana’s readiness for the demands of English football. The Arsenal manager is reported to have questioned whether the winger possessed the physicality required to succeed in the Premier League, widely regarded as the most demanding league in Europe.
With those doubts unresolved, the move collapsed. Fofana has since joined Premier League rivals Sunderland, who won the race for his signature ahead of Crystal Palace.
The decision means Arsenal have missed the chance to bring in a player they viewed as having significant long-term potential. Fofana’s age and attacking qualities made him a possible investment for the future, but Arteta’s reservations over his ability to withstand the division’s intensity ultimately prevented the deal from progressing.
Arsenal have instead strengthened their attack with the addition of left-sided attacker Christos Tzolis. His arrival followed the sale of Leandro Trossard to Besiktas earlier in the window.
The club continue to monitor attacking options, but Fofana is no longer available to Arsenal after completing his move to Sunderland. The Belgian winger’s switch also gives him the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League, the competition in which Arteta had doubts about his physical suitability.
