Arsenal began their league campaign with a composed and convincing victory over Coventry, with Christos Tzolis and Martin Odegaard among the four players to earn the highest marks in a subjective assessment of Mikel Arteta’s side.
The result underlined Arsenal’s consistency after their opening success of the new season. Their win over Manchester City in the English Super Cup generated greater excitement and acclaim, but the performance against Coventry demonstrated another important quality: control.
Arsenal collected the points in a fixture where they were expected to do so, and did it without encountering significant problems. That ability to remain calm and reliable in such matches is a defining characteristic of a strong team.
The players were rated on a 10-point scale.
Ben White – 7.5
Bukayo Saka scored from a rebound, but Ben White was the most influential player on Arsenal’s right flank.
The defender made a contribution at both ends of the pitch. He recorded two tackles and two interceptions while also providing a consistent outlet in possession, completing 73 accurate passes – a particularly notable figure for a full-back.
White’s energy was just as important. He repeatedly made forward runs and delivered three dangerous crosses into the area. One of those deliveries directly led to a goal, further highlighting his influence in attack.
Myles Lewis-Skelly – 7.5
If White outshone Saka in terms of activity on the right, Myles Lewis-Skelly produced an equally impressive display in his area of the pitch, even surpassing Declan Rice in several key aspects.
The young player completed more accurate passes than Rice and was also stronger in duels, tackles and ball recoveries. His work was not limited to defensive duties: Lewis-Skelly won three set pieces and tested Coventry’s defence with a dangerous long-range effort.
He also showed excellent security in possession, rarely giving the ball away. His performance combined intensity, composure and a willingness to contribute in both phases of the game.
Christos Tzolis – 8.5
Christos Tzolis has made an immediate impact on Arsenal’s left side. The Greek forward played with confidence and without any obvious need for an adaptation period, helping to make that flank the most dangerous area of the team’s attack.
Tzolis won the ball before supplying the pass that preceded Arsenal’s opening goal. He then created further danger with a low delivery that provoked Bukayo Saka’s goal.
His contribution extended beyond attacking moments. Tzolis continued to work hard defensively and completed every phase of play with intensity. That combination of threat in the final third and commitment without the ball made him Arsenal’s highest-rated player in the assessment.
Martin Odegaard – 8.5
Martin Odegaard played a decisive role in Arsenal’s victory for the second consecutive match.
Against Manchester City, the captain had helped drive the team’s most dangerous attacks. He performed a similar function against Coventry, controlling the rhythm of the game and directing Arsenal’s offensive moves.
Odegaard’s passing was central to the result. He switched play towards the left, setting in motion the sequences that produced Arsenal’s first and second goals. He also began and finished the attacking move that led to the third.
His defensive contribution was equally notable. Odegaard registered three key passes and made three tackles, while winning all four of his duels. It was a complete performance from the Arsenal captain and one that confirmed his importance to Arteta’s team.
