Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry at Emirates Stadium, as Mikel Arteta’s side underlined their ambition with a dominant display.
The champions were superior in every department, combining greater pace and physical strength with sharper finishing to overwhelm the Sky Blues. It was far more than a routine opening-day success; Arsenal’s performance offered an immediate statement of intent.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring with a composed first-time finish after excellent work from Riccardo Calafiori and Christos Tzolis. Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage with a simple finish, while the visitors were unable to handle the threat posed by Arsenal’s attack throughout the match.
Daily Mail Sport’s Isaan Khan watched the game at Emirates Stadium and rated the Arsenal players as follows:
David Raya – 6.5
A largely quiet evening. He needed to remain alert when Loum Tchaouna tried an ambitious effort in the first half, but otherwise had little to do.
Ben White – 7
Worked particularly well with Bukayo Saka, regularly exchanging passes with the winger. He also offered a threat in the final third, delivering several crisp crosses.
Cristhian Mosquera – 6.5
Composed in possession and comfortable during a match in which Arsenal controlled proceedings. He formed a solid partnership with Gabriel.
Gabriel – 6.5
Handled the physical challenge presented by Ellis Simms effectively and stood firm in the centre of the defence.
Riccardo Calafiori – 7
Produced an excellent contribution for Havertz’s opening goal. He repeatedly pushed forward and enjoyed joining Arsenal’s attacks, while his unconventional positioning created problems for Coventry.
Declan Rice – 7
Looked keen to get on the scoresheet and had several attempts, including a curling left-footed effort that drifted narrowly wide. Finding the net more regularly is an area where he can still improve.
Myles Lewis-Skelly – 7
Continued to carry the ball forward and helped prevent Coventry from settling. He looked increasingly comfortable in the midfield role.
Bukayo Saka – 7.5
Given plenty of room to attack Jay Dasilva, Saka saw a number of shots and crosses deflected wide before taking advantage of a straightforward chance to score.
Martin Odegaard – 8.5
Energetic and influential in midfield, Odegaard demonstrated why he remains such an important part of Arteta’s side. He looked confident and fully fit.
Christos Tzolis – 9
The Greek winger repeatedly unsettled Coventry’s defence. His interception created the opportunity for Calafiori to assist Havertz, and his cross helped set up Saka’s goal. It was an extremely encouraging start to his Arsenal career.
Kai Havertz – 7.5
Looking fully fit, Havertz embraced his role as Arsenal’s main striker and finished calmly to put the hosts ahead.
Arteta’s substitutions saw Noni Madueke replace Rice and Martin Zubimendi come on for Saka in the 68th minute, with both receiving ratings of 6.5. Ebere Eze replaced Tzolis and Mikel Merino came on for Odegaard in the 76th minute, while Piero Hincapie replaced Calafiori in the 82nd minute.
Manager: Mikel Arteta – 9
An ideal beginning to Arsenal’s title defence. His side were completely dominant.
Coventry’s ratings were: Rushworth 5; Van Ewijk 4, Thomas 6, Amenda 6, Dasilva 5; Grimes 6; Tchaouna 5 (Hamer 82), Yirenkyi 4 (Torp 63, 6), Onyeka 5, Thomas-Asante 6 (Rudoni 70, 6); Simms 6 (Awoniyi 70, 6).
Manager: Frank Lampard – 5
Coventry were unable to cope with Arsenal’s quality and spent much of the match under pressure.
