Arsenal began their Premier League title defence in impressive fashion as they swept aside newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners, who had already underlined their ambitions by beating Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend, produced another commanding performance to send an early warning to their rivals.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring after 15 minutes, with Bukayo Saka doubling Arsenal’s advantage eight minutes later. Martin Ødegaard added a third four minutes after half-time to complete a comfortable victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Arsenal’s new signing Christos Tzolis was central to the first two goals on his Premier League debut. The Greece international initially won possession back before Riccardo Calafiori supplied Havertz for the opener.
Tzolis was involved again for the second goal, delivering a cross which Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth diverted into the path of Saka, who finished to make it 2-0.
“What a left-winger Arsenal have got,” purred Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher on co-commentary.
Coventry struggled to cope with Arsenal’s control and intensity. They failed to make a tackle during the first half and were unable to get close enough to disrupt Arteta’s team.
The visitors did not improve significantly after the interval. Arsenal extended their lead in the 49th minute when Ødegaard found the net with a miscued finish, giving Coventry an even more difficult task.
Arsenal’s attacking combinations were a particular feature of the performance. Ben White, Saka and Ødegaard repeatedly linked up effectively down the right, while Tzolis provided a constant threat from the left.
Havertz also looked sharp, supported by assured midfield performances from Declan Rice and Myles Lewis-Skelly. Those displays suggested Arsenal are already operating at a high level despite the campaign only having begun.
Coventry’s defence was rarely able to test Arsenal, although the hosts had also strengthened in that area. Ezri Konsa received a pre-match welcome following his £55m transfer from Aston Villa, a move which has added further depth to the squad.
There will be more demanding challenges ahead for Arsenal, but their opening performance suggested they will be difficult opponents for any team. The result also offered an immediate demonstration that they are ready to compete again at the top of the Premier League.
Coventry, meanwhile, will not have to face Arsenal again until April. Their attention now turns to next weekend’s home match against Hull City, a fixture likely to carry considerably greater importance for their season.
