Nigerian forward Tolu Arokodare scored twice as Ajax overcame Swiss side Sion 5-3 in an entertaining UEFA Conference League qualifying match.
Arokodare found the net shortly before half-time and struck again early in the second half as Ajax secured qualification after an eight-goal contest.
The 45+1st-minute goal gave the Nigerian his first of the evening before he added another in the 51st minute. His two goals underlined the growing contribution he is making to the Dutch club’s attack since arriving in Amsterdam.
The performance continues an encouraging start to Arokodare’s time at Ajax. After five appearances, the striker has now recorded three goals and two assists, giving him an impressive return during the early stages of his career with the club.
His latest display will provide further evidence that the move to Ajax is giving him an opportunity to regain confidence and rediscover the form that previously made him an effective goalscorer.
Arokodare’s spell at Wolves had proved difficult, with regular opportunities and consistency hard to find. His switch to Ajax has instead offered the Nigerian a new environment in which to establish himself and play a more significant role.
The forward has responded by making an immediate impression, becoming increasingly influential with each appearance.
His contribution against Sion was particularly important as Ajax faced a demanding European fixture. His movement and ability to find the right positions allowed him to take advantage of opportunities, while his finishing ensured he played a decisive part in the Dutch side’s victory.
Arokodare’s first goal arrived just before the interval, giving Ajax further momentum heading into the second half. He then needed only six minutes after the restart to score again and complete his brace.
The result means Ajax progressed from the Conference League qualifying tie following a match in which both sides produced an attacking display.
For Arokodare, the two-goal performance adds to what has been a positive beginning in the Netherlands. Three goals and two assists from five matches represent a strong early contribution and suggest the striker is beginning to settle into his new surroundings.
The Nigerian will now be hoping to continue that progress as Ajax turn their attention to the challenges ahead in both domestic and European competition.
His form will also be of interest to supporters in Nigeria, with his performances potentially strengthening his case among the attacking options being considered by the Super Eagles for future international assignments.
The forward’s immediate priority, however, will be maintaining the level of performance that has helped him make such a promising start at Ajax.
His two goals against Sion follow a series of productive appearances in which he has combined goalscoring with creating opportunities for teammates. The five-match return of three goals and two assists provides a clear indication of his early impact.
Arokodare’s start at Ajax therefore represents a significant contrast to the difficulties he experienced at Wolves. Rather than struggling for regular involvement, he is now receiving opportunities to demonstrate his attacking qualities and has responded with goals and assists.
With his confidence appearing to grow, the Nigerian striker will hope the latest performance is another step towards becoming a key attacking player for Ajax.
For a forward seeking to revive his career, the early evidence is positive. Arokodare has made his mark in Europe and will now look to carry that momentum into Ajax’s upcoming matches.
