Araujo says missing two World Cups has been “truly very tough”, but the Liverpool defender believes he can help Uruguay enter a successful new era under Marcelo Bielsa.
Speaking to the Uruguayan Football Association’s official media during preparations for a friendly against India, Araujo reflected on a difficult period in his career, his return to the national team and his first months at Liverpool.
The defender was part of Uruguay’s World Cup squad but did not play, having also missed the previous tournament. He said the experience had affected both him and his family.
“That experience was very difficult – for me and also for my family, who suffered with me,” he said. “There have been two major tournaments that I couldn’t participate in. It’s very tough, truly very tough.”
Araujo said he had continued hoping for an opportunity to play, but was again unable to take part. While he understood the doubts and criticism that followed, he added that he also felt personally responsible.
“I’m very sad because of it,” he said. “However, these are all part of life. You encounter difficulties, learn to overcome them, look forward and keep working hard.”
Uruguay have begun a new phase under Bielsa after the World Cup and a subsequent international break, playing two matches. Araujo believes better times are ahead for the team and is determined to help deliver success for his country.
“I know what I can bring to the Uruguayan team,” he said. “I firmly believe a very beautiful phase is coming – for the whole team and for myself. I will do my utmost, give my all and strive to win a championship.”
He said his faith, family and love of football had helped him recover from the disappointment.
“I’m a man of faith. I rely on God and my family,” Araujo said. “We’re lucky to be able to do what we love most as a job. That’s what motivates me to keep going.”
He added that the resilience associated with Uruguay was also important to him, saying people must be prepared to fall, get back up and try again. Despite his setbacks, Araujo said he remained convinced that “the best is yet to come”.
At club level, Araujo has quickly settled at Liverpool after only a few months and a limited number of appearances. He has not always played in his usual position, but has already earned the support of the Anfield crowd, who chanted his name during the match against Atletico Madrid.
“I’m very happy and feel very comfortable here,” he said. “My teammates, the coaching staff and the fans made me feel at home from the very beginning.”
Araujo said the regular playing time he had wanted was allowing him to enjoy football and demonstrate the benefits of his hard work. He insisted he had not joined the Premier League to prove anything to others.
“I know my worth and what I can do as a player,” he said. “I simply enjoy playing football.”
