Carlo Ancelotti and Wilfried Mbappe watched from the stands as Paris Saint-Germain produced a remarkable late comeback to draw 2-2 with Lille in the second round of Ligue 1.
The match at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Friday appeared to be heading towards a Lille victory after the hosts established a 2-0 lead and kept Paris Saint-Germain at arm’s length for most of the contest. However, the visitors scored twice in stoppage time to rescue a point and avoid defeat.
Among those watching from the stands were Ancelotti and Wilfried Mbappe, who had both travelled to support their sons. The pair were seated together as their respective family connections featured prominently in the match.
Since the summer, Lille have been managed by Davide Ancelotti, the son of Carlo Ancelotti. Davide Ancelotti had spent many years working alongside his father as an assistant before taking charge of the Ligue 1 club.
Lille also named 19-year-old midfielder Ethan Mbappe in their starting line-up. Ethan, the younger brother of Kylian Mbappe, began the match for the hosts before being substituted in the 68th minute.
That meant the fixture brought together two young players whose fathers and brothers are prominent figures in European football. Davide Ancelotti was leading Lille from the technical area, while Ethan Mbappe started in midfield with Wilfried Mbappe watching on.
For much of the evening, the home side looked set to claim all three points. Lille’s two-goal advantage remained intact until the closing stages, leaving Paris Saint-Germain facing their first defeat of the campaign in the match’s final minutes.
Instead, the visitors mounted a late response and found the net twice during added time. The turnaround secured a 2-2 draw and transformed what had looked like a Lille success into a share of the points.
The result ensured that Paris Saint-Germain left Stade Pierre-Mauroy with something to show for their efforts, while Lille were denied victory despite leading by two goals until the final moments.
The match also provided a notable family subplot, with Carlo Ancelotti and Davide Ancelotti representing one coaching partnership, and Wilfried Mbappe and Ethan Mbappe another footballing connection. The younger Mbappe’s involvement ended after 68 minutes, while his team ultimately had to settle for a draw after Paris Saint-Germain’s late fightback.
