Napoli are working to extend Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa’s contract, with new head coach Massimiliano Allegri keen for the midfielder to remain at the club.
The Cameroon international is entering the final year of his current agreement, and earlier discussions over a renewal had stalled. However, there are now indications that negotiations could restart, with Allegri’s view of the player understood to be influencing Napoli’s position.
Anguissa has impressed during Napoli’s pre-season preparations at Castel di Sangro, helping to strengthen the case for keeping him beyond the end of his existing deal. Although the midfielder appeared to be moving towards the edge of the squad after a difficult campaign, Allegri reportedly believes his qualities should be retained.
The coach has worked closely with Anguissa during the past several weeks and is understood to value what the 29-year-old brings to the team. Allegri’s preference is therefore for Napoli to reach an agreement with the player rather than allow him to leave when his contract expires.
A significant moment came on Friday at the club’s training camp, where Giovanni Branchini, Allegri’s agent, was seen alongside Anguissa’s representative, Maxime Nana. The two men were pictured sitting calmly side by side.
According to Sky Sport, their presence together was viewed as meaningful in the context of Anguissa’s future. The meeting has added to the sense that the midfielder’s situation may be changing after renewal talks previously failed to progress.
Napoli’s next step will be taken by president Aurelio De Laurentiis. He is expected to return to discussions with Anguissa’s representatives in an effort to agree the terms of a new contract.
For now, the player remains effectively in the last year of his Napoli deal. The club are attempting to secure his future, while Allegri’s support has provided renewed momentum to efforts that had appeared to have stalled.
The midfielder’s form in pre-season and the coach’s desire to keep him have brought Anguissa back into focus. Napoli must now determine whether they can match the player’s expectations and complete a renewal before his contract reaches its final stage.
