Al-Ittihad Club have confirmed that Malian midfielder Mahamadou Doumbia will undergo surgery after suffering a serious knee injury during a recent cup clash.
The 21-year-old sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the semi-final of the King’s Cup Saudi Arabia against Al-Kholood on March 18, 2026. Doumbia was forced off the pitch on a stretcher just 12 minutes into the match, immediately raising concerns about the severity of the injury.
Subsequent medical examinations confirmed the worst fears ; a complete ACL rupture, one of the most serious injuries in football, often requiring months of recovery and rehabilitation.
Al-Ittihad Statement
In an official statement, Al-Ittihad revealed that the player will undergo surgery in Lyon, where the procedure will be carried out by renowned specialist Professor Brantand Sonieri Kouty, a respected figure in the treatment of ligament injuries.
The club emphasized that Doumbia is currently undergoing a carefully structured pre-surgery rehabilitation program. This phase is crucial, as it helps strengthen the knee and surrounding muscles before the operation, increasing the chances of a successful recovery and smoother return to action.
“The intervention, scheduled for next Thursday, will be conducted under the supervision of a specialist in ACL injuries,” the club noted, reaffirming their commitment to closely monitoring the player’s progress throughout the process.
This injury represents a significant setback for both player and club. Doumbia has been an important figure for Al-Ittihad this season, contributing four goals and seven assists in 30 appearances. His energy, creativity, and versatility in midfield have made him a valuable asset for the Jeddah-based side.
Beyond club football, the injury is also a concern for Mali national football team, where Doumbia is regarded as one of the emerging talents expected to play a bigger role in the coming years.
ACL injuries typically require a recovery period of six to nine months, depending on the player’s rehabilitation progress. For a young player like Doumbia, the focus will now be on ensuring a full and careful recovery rather than rushing back to action.
Al-Ittihad have assured supporters that they will provide the necessary medical support and resources to aid the midfielder’s rehabilitation journey. The club’s medical staff will remain in constant contact with the surgical team in France to oversee every stage of his recovery.
