Al Ahly target Bezerra as Cairo derby carries high stakes

Al Ahly have finalised preparations for a decisive Egyptian Premier League encounter against rivals Zamalek, with a specific tactical plan aimed at limiting the influence of Brazilian winger Juan Bezerra.

The match, the 132nd meeting between the Cairo giants in league competition, will be played at Cairo International Stadium at 20:00 local time as part of the fifth round of the title-deciding phase.

Al Ahly enter the contest under pressure, seeking to respond to recent setbacks and regain momentum in the title race. Their most recent league outing ended in a 3-0 defeat to Pyramids FC, a result that saw them drop to third place in the standings on 44 points. Zamalek, by contrast, lead the table with 50 points, adding further significance to the encounter.

Tactical focus on transitions

According to sources within Al Ahly, the coaching staff expect Zamalek to adopt a counter-attacking approach, built around rapid transitions and the pace of Bezerra on the flank.

“Danish coach Jess Torup expects Zamalek’s coach Moataz Gamal to play on transitions in this match, relying on the speed of Brazilian Juan Bezerra, leaving possession to the Red Devils’ players in the middle of the field.”

This anticipated strategy has shaped Al Ahly’s preparations, with an emphasis on controlling space and preventing quick breaks that could expose defensive vulnerabilities.

Defensive structure built around containment

To counter this threat, Al Ahly are set to implement a tightly organised defensive system focused on neutralising Bezerra’s movement. Left-back Ahmed Nabil Kouka has been assigned a central role in this plan, tasked with close marking the winger.

Sources indicate that Kouka’s previous success in containing Bezerra influenced the decision, with the coaching staff viewing him as the most suitable option for the role.

Support will be provided by midfielder Marwan Attia, who has been instructed to remain close to Kouka during defensive transitions, helping to restrict Bezerra’s space and limit his ability to accelerate into attacking positions.

Behind them, one of the central defenders—either Hadi Riad or Yassin Marei—is expected to offer additional cover, positioning themselves to close gaps and intercept any forward runs. This layered approach is designed to minimise the effectiveness of Zamalek’s wide play while maintaining defensive balance.

High stakes in the title race

Beyond individual matchups, the fixture carries broader implications for the league standings. Al Ahly require a positive result to keep their title ambitions alive and restore confidence among supporters following a run of inconsistent performances.

Zamalek, meanwhile, will aim to consolidate their lead at the top, with victory potentially strengthening their grip on the championship.

Fine margins expected

While tactical planning provides a framework, the Cairo derby has long been defined by unpredictability. Execution on the pitch, rather than strategy alone, is likely to determine the outcome.

Al Ahly’s focus on neutralising Bezerra highlights the importance of individual duels within the broader contest, as both sides prepare for a match where small details could prove decisive.
