CK Akonnor has guided Gor Mahia to the Kenyan Premier League title after the club secured an unassailable lead at the top of the table with two matches still remaining in the season.
The championship was confirmed after title rivals AFC Leopards suffered a 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet on Sunday, a result that ensured Gor Mahia could no longer be caught in the standings.
The title is the club’s 22nd Kenyan Premier League crown and continues Gor Mahia’s long-standing dominance in Kenyan football.
With two games still in hand, Gor Mahia sit on 68 points, four clear of AFC Leopards, who have only one remaining fixture and are therefore unable to close the gap before the end of the campaign.
The achievement represents a major success for Akonnor, who took charge of the club in August 2025 and has overseen a consistent run throughout the season.
Although Gor Mahia’s week 33 fixture against Mara Sugar in Homa Bay was cancelled because of a court-related matter, the postponement had no effect on the title race as the club had already placed itself in a commanding position through earlier performances.
Akonnor’s work has been supported by an all-Ghanaian technical team, with assistant coach Bismark Kobi Mensah, goalkeepers’ trainer Ben Owu and video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo all playing roles in the club’s successful campaign.
The influence of Ghanaian personnel has also extended onto the pitch, with several Ghanaian players contributing during the title-winning season.
Enock Morrison, George Amonoo, Ebenezer Adukwaw and Ebenezer Assifuah were all part of the squad that helped Gor Mahia maintain their advantage at the top of the league table.
Gor Mahia’s consistency across the campaign proved decisive in the title race, particularly during the closing stages of the season as pressure increased from AFC Leopards.
The club’s latest triumph further strengthens their reputation as one of Kenya’s most successful football institutions, while also marking an important achievement for Akonnor and his backroom staff in their first season in charge.
For Akonnor, the success adds another significant chapter to his coaching career, with the former Ghana coach delivering silverware less than a year after his appointment.
The title victory is also likely to increase attention on the growing influence of Ghanaian coaches and players in East African football, following Gor Mahia’s dominant campaign under the leadership of Akonnor and his technical team.
