Ajax prospect Mokuo opts for DR Congo over Belgium

Emerging midfielder Gorthy Mokuo has chosen to represent DR Congo national football team, ending his international association with Belgium’s youth setup and aligning his future with the Leopards.

The decision was confirmed by transfer market journalist Sacha Tavoleri, who reported that the Ajax Amsterdam player is targeting participation in the upcoming World Cup with the Congolese national side.

Strategic switch ahead of major tournament

DR Congo are preparing for the World Cup scheduled for June, having secured qualification through the intercontinental play-off, where they overcame Bolivia. The team has been placed in a competitive group alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia.

Mokuo’s decision is seen as a timely reinforcement for the squad, as the team looks to strengthen its options ahead of the tournament.

From Belgium youth to senior ambitions

Although born in Belgium, Mokuo is of Congolese origin and had previously represented Belgium at youth level. During his time with the Belgian Under-21 team, he made six appearances and scored two goals, highlighting his potential as a versatile midfielder.

His switch to DR Congo signals a shift in international ambition, with the player now aiming to establish himself at senior level on the global stage.

Development through European football

Mokuo’s rise has been shaped by his progression through European club football. He began his career in the youth ranks of Belgian side Gent before moving to Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2024.

After spending one season in Ajax’s youth system, he earned promotion to the first team, where he has since become a regular contributor.

Breakthrough season at Ajax

The current campaign has marked a significant step forward in Mokuo’s development. He has featured in 34 matches across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing three assists.

Operating primarily as a defensive midfielder, his performances have demonstrated both defensive reliability and attacking contribution, attributes that are likely to benefit his new national team.

Boost for DR Congo squad depth

Mokuo’s inclusion offers additional depth and flexibility for DR Congo, particularly in midfield areas where tactical discipline and ball progression are essential.

The Leopards will be aiming to compete strongly in a group that includes established footballing nations, making squad strength a critical factor.

Eyes on the World Cup

For Mokuo, the decision represents an opportunity to play at the highest level of international football. His ambition to feature at the World Cup reflects both personal aspiration and confidence in his ability to contribute to DR Congo’s campaign.

As preparations continue, his integration into the squad will be closely watched, with expectations that his European experience could play a role in shaping the team’s performance.

A defining career moment

The switch in allegiance marks a pivotal moment in Mokuo’s career. With consistent performances at club level and a clear pathway to international competition, the midfielder now enters a new phase defined by opportunity and expectation.

His journey from youth football in Belgium to the senior ranks of DR Congo highlights the increasingly global nature of modern football, where players navigate multiple identities and pathways in pursuit of international success.
