Togo head coach Patrice Neveu has questioned the 2-0 defeat by Zambia in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, insisting the scoreline did not accurately reflect what happened on the pitch.
Neveu was visibly frustrated after Tuesday’s match at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, where Zambia’s Chipolopolo secured victory despite what the Togo coach felt was a competitive performance from his side.
The result leaves Togo facing disappointment after a match in which Neveu believed his players created enough pressure and opportunities to take something from the game.

Zambia made the breakthrough through Albert Kangwanda, with the early goal making the task more difficult for Togo.
However, Neveu said his team responded by applying sustained pressure and producing a performance that, in his view, was not reflected by the final score.
“The result does not reflect what happened on the pitch,” Neveu said.
The French coach was particularly unhappy with how the match unfolded after Togo went behind, maintaining that his players continued to compete and created opportunities during the game.
Togo had spells of possession and threatened the Zambian defence, especially during the first half, but were unable to turn those opportunities into goals.
Zambia, meanwhile, made the most of their chances and added a second goal to secure all three points.
The defeat prompted an emotional response from Neveu during his post-match press conference, with the coach calling for greater respect for his players, team and supporters.
Asked by a reporter to explain what “certain things” had influenced the outcome of the game if they were not related to what happened on the pitch, Neveu declined to provide details.
“You also saw what happened. I wont say anything. Go and analyze the game and you will see. The Togolese people and my players were disrespected today.”
The reporter pressed the Togo coach to clarify the claim, pointing out that Neveu himself had raised the issue and asking him to provide more details.
Neveu again refused to elaborate, saying he believed the events of the match were clear to those who watched it.
“Everyone saw what happened. I will not say much.”
His comments came after a match in which Zambia were more clinical in front of goal, while Togo struggled to convert the opportunities they created.
Neveu maintained that the performance of his players deserved greater recognition despite the result, arguing that the two-goal margin did not tell the full story of the contest.
