Senegal secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Ethiopia on Tuesday to collect three points on the second matchday of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Lions of Teranga had to withstand a determined second-half response from Ethiopia after taking an early lead, with the hosts creating several opportunities before the final whistle.
Ibrahim Mbaye scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute, finishing with his right foot after being set up by Nicolas Jackson.
The early breakthrough gave Senegal an advantage they would hold until the end, although they were unable to add a second goal despite creating opportunities.
Senegal came close to extending their lead before the interval when Pape Gueye found an opening in the 10th minute, but his attempt went wide of the target.
Ethiopia also looked for a response during the opening half, but their efforts failed to seriously threaten the Senegalese defence.
The home side increased the pressure after the break as they searched for an equaliser.
Their best opportunity came in the 57th minute when Canaan Markneh attempted to beat the Senegal goalkeeper with a header, but the effort was saved.
Senegal continued to look for a second goal as the match progressed and had another clear chance in the closing stages.
In the 86th minute, Jackson was presented with an opportunity to double Senegal’s advantage after receiving a pass from Mbaye. However, the Ethiopian goalkeeper denied the Senegal forward.
The missed opportunity meant Senegal had to endure a tense final period with their lead still only one goal.
Ethiopia pushed forward in search of an equaliser and created a number of chances from set pieces and during their late attacks.
Senegal were forced to remain disciplined as Ethiopia continued to apply pressure, particularly in the closing minutes.
Six minutes of added time were played, increasing the pressure on the Senegalese side as they attempted to protect their advantage.
Despite Ethiopia’s late efforts, Senegal held on to claim the victory.
The result gives Senegal three points from a match in which their ability to preserve an early lead proved decisive.
Mbaye’s goal ultimately separated the two sides, with Senegal unable to convert their later opportunities but managing to prevent Ethiopia from finding a way through.
The victory represents an important result for the Lions of Teranga on the second day of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Senegal’s performance was built around the early goal and their ability to remain organised as Ethiopia increased the pressure after half-time.
Ethiopia had opportunities to level the score, particularly through their set pieces and late attacks, but Senegal’s defence held firm until the final whistle.
With six minutes of additional time also played, the Senegalese maintained their narrow advantage to leave Ethiopia with all three points.
