Aden McCarthy praises Kaizer Chiefs support after Champions League goal

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy says the club and its supporters remain a major source of pride after he scored for Sabah FK against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League.

The 22-year-old found the net in Sabah FK’s 2-1 defeat by Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, continuing an impressive run of performances on Europe’s biggest stage.

McCarthy also thanked South African fans for backing him throughout the competition. Asked after the match about the support he received following another strong display, he said: “The best country in the world. You know, it’s my home, where I come from. I come from a massive team with a massive supporting group, you know. From home, that’s how I always know my people to be. I notice everything. I love my country and the people there. Ja, I appreciate all the support.”

The defender has made a strong impression since leaving Kaizer Chiefs in June. His performances have helped Sabah FK progress through the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds and reach the competition’s main phase.

He has continued to attract attention while facing some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Before scoring against Borussia Dortmund, McCarthy impressed during Sabah FK’s meeting with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

His latest goal marked another significant moment in his development since departing Naturena, while also giving him another opportunity to represent South Africa at the highest level of European club football.

McCarthy spent two seasons with Kaizer Chiefs, making 24 appearances and scoring once. He has one cap for Bafana Bafana, earned in 2025.
