Aden McCarthy included in Pitso Mosimane’s 38-man Bafana Bafana squad

Sabah FK defender Aden McCarthy has been named in Pitso Mosimane’s preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for next month’s back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya.

South Africa are aiming to secure qualification for next year’s tournament, with Mosimane naming a 38-player squad on Friday evening.

McCarthy is among the less familiar selections and has been included despite having only one senior cap for Bafana Bafana. The 22-year-old has made a strong impression in Europe since leaving Kaizer Chiefs, featuring in four UEFA Champions League matches for Sabah FK.

His inclusion follows a series of notable performances in the competition’s qualifying rounds. McCarthy helped the Turkish club progress into the main phase of the UEFA Champions League and has continued to attract attention against high-profile opposition.

The defender previously impressed during Sabah FK’s match against Manchester United at Old Trafford before scoring against Borussia Dortmund.

After finding the net against Dortmund, McCarthy spoke about his pride in representing South Africa and acknowledged the support he had received from his country and former club.

“The best country in the world. You know, it’s my home, where I come from. I come from a massive team with a massive supporting group, you know. From home, that’s how I always know my people to be. I notice everything. I love my country and the people there. Ja, I appreciate all the support,” McCarthy said.

His goal against Borussia Dortmund provided another indication of the progress he has made since departing Kaizer Chiefs in June. The performances have also strengthened his profile on the European stage and earned him a place in Mosimane’s provisional plans.

McCarthy’s form has come after his move away from Naturena, where he had been associated with Kaizer Chiefs. His appearances against some of Europe’s biggest clubs have now brought him back into contention for international selection.

The preliminary squad will be reduced before South Africa’s two matches against Kenya. McCarthy must therefore still secure his place in the final Bafana Bafana squad.
