Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena escaped unharmed after his car crashed into a wall in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal last Sunday.
Mokoena reportedly lost control of the vehicle as he approached a roundabout near Trevasa Court. The incident happened around Hertz Boulevard, opposite the Emfuleni Estate.
Although he was not injured, the 45-year-old former defender may still be dealing with the effects of the crash.
According to Timespost, Mokoena was driving when the vehicle left his control before colliding with the wall. He later reportedly told The Sedibeng Ster that he had been returning from work-related commitments with the South African Football Association (SAFA).
He had spent the previous week at Marks Park in Johannesburg, where the SAFA and FIFA Talent Development Scheme U15 Inter-Provincial Tournament was being held.
Mokoena remains one of South Africa’s most decorated international footballers. In 1999, at the age of 18, he became the youngest player to represent Bafana Bafana, a record he held for several years.
He went on to win 105 caps for the South Africa national team, a record number, and scored one goal before retiring from professional football in 2013.
The former captain was included in Bafana Bafana squads for two FIFA World Cup tournaments, in 2002 and 2010.
Mokoena captained South Africa in each of the three FIFA World Cup matches played on home soil.
