Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday, with Diomande playing a staring role and Kylian Mbappé scoring twice to give José Mourinho his first El Clasico win since returning as the club’s manager.
The result ended Barcelona’s run of nine consecutive league victories and reduced their advantage over their rivals in the La Liga title race to three points.
Barcelona remain top of the table on 27 points, while Real Madrid moved to 24 points after claiming victory in the first meeting between the sides in the 2026-27 season.
Mbappé opened the scoring shortly before half-time before Barcelona equalised through Raphinha in the second half. However, the France striker struck again three minutes from the end of normal time to secure all three points for the visitors.
The result represents a significant setback for Barcelona, who had won all nine of their opening league matches and held a six-point lead over Madrid before Sunday’s encounter.
Despite enjoying more possession during the first half, Barcelona found it difficult to penetrate Madrid’s defensive line, while the visitors looked dangerous when launching counterattacks.
Madrid took the lead in the 41st minute through an effort that involved an attempted clearance by Barcelona defender Gerard Martín.
Yan Diomande delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Martín tried to prevent the ball from reaching the Madrid attack. His attempted clearance instead struck Mbappé’s leg and deflected into the net, giving the visitors the advantage before the interval.
Barcelona responded with greater attacking purpose after the break and drew level in the 61st minute.
Midfielder Pedri supplied a well-timed pass into the penalty area for Raphinha, who finished past Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin to restore parity and give the home side renewed hope of securing a positive result.
The equaliser shifted the momentum towards Barcelona, but Madrid continued to pose a threat on the counterattack as the contest approached its conclusion.
With the match appearing to be heading towards a draw, Madrid produced the decisive moment in the 87th minute.
Jude Bellingham began the counterattacking move before Eduardo Camavinga advanced into the penalty area and delivered the ball across goal. Mbappé was in position to finish into an unguarded net, restoring Madrid’s lead and completing his brace.
Barcelona were unable to find another equaliser, allowing Mourinho’s side to leave the stadium with a victory that could have important consequences for the title race.
The win also marked Mourinho’s first success in El Clasico since returning to the Real Madrid bench, giving him a positive result in one of Spanish football’s most significant fixtures.
Before the match, Barcelona had established themselves as the early pace-setters in La Liga, collecting the maximum 27 points from their first nine games. Madrid, meanwhile, began the encounter six points behind their rivals.
Sunday’s result has considerably narrowed that difference, with Barcelona retaining top spot but now facing increased pressure from Madrid.
The two clubs are scheduled to meet again later in the league campaign, giving Barcelona an opportunity to respond to Sunday’s defeat.
For Madrid, the victory provides an important boost as the season progresses, while Mbappé’s two goals ensured that his side emerged victorious from the opening El Clasico of the 2026-27 campaign.
