Ghanaian-born teenager McAidoo makes his mark in City’s win

English-Ghanaian winger Ryan McAidoo made an immediate impact after coming off the bench as Manchester City secured a convincing 5-1 victory over AEK Athens in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

The teenager provided the assist for Phil Foden’s third goal of the evening in the 76th minute, completing a dominant performance by the hosts at the Etihad Stadium.

McAidoo, who replaced Floyd Samba in the 62nd minute, demonstrated his attacking ability with a well-timed run down the right flank before delivering a precise cross into the penalty area. Foden converted from close range to complete his hat-trick and round off City’s emphatic win.

The assist marked a significant contribution from the young winger, who was among the Manchester City youngsters given an opportunity to feature in European competition.

City established control early in the match when Elliot Anderson opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Foden extended the home side’s advantage in the 34th minute, giving the hosts a two-goal lead heading into the interval.

AEK Athens attempted to mount a comeback after the break, with Stavros Pilios reducing the deficit seven minutes into the second half.

However, City’s response was swift. Rayan Cherki restored their two-goal cushion in the 57th minute, putting the home side back in a commanding position.

McAidoo entered the contest five minutes later, replacing Samba as City continued to press forward. His introduction added another attacking option on the right, and he made his contribution count as the match progressed.

Foden scored his second goal of the night in the 65th minute to further strengthen City’s grip on the game. The England midfielder then completed his hat-trick 11 minutes later, finishing McAidoo’s cross to make it 5-1.

The goal capped an impressive evening for Foden, while McAidoo’s assist provided a notable highlight for the teenage winger during his appearance in Europe’s premier club competition.

City’s five-goal display reflected their attacking strength, with Anderson, Cherki and Foden all finding the net in a match in which the hosts recovered quickly from AEK’s brief challenge after half-time.

For McAidoo, the appearance offered an opportunity to demonstrate his potential on a major European stage. His decisive involvement in the final goal ensured that his contribution was part of a convincing team performance rather than simply a late introduction.

Manchester City will now look to carry the momentum from the result into the next stage of their Champions League campaign as they seek to build on the emphatic victory.
