Highly rated Franco-Ivorian defender Joane Gadou has completed a move to Borussia Dortmund, with the Bundesliga club continuing its long-standing strategy of investing in some of Europe’s brightest young talents.
The 19-year-old centre-back joins Dortmund from FC Red Bull Salzburg in a transfer reportedly valued at around €20m.
He has signed a long-term contract that will keep him at the German club until 2031.
The move represents another major step in the rapid rise of a player who has already attracted attention across Europe for his performances at youth and senior level despite his age.
Born in France and of Ivorian descent, Gadou has been regarded as one of the most promising defenders of his generation.
In 2024, English newspaper The Guardian named him among the best footballers born in 2007 worldwide, further underlining his growing reputation in European football.
Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken said the club had followed Gadou’s development closely since his days at Paris Saint-Germain.
“We have known Joane for a very long time and have been monitoring him since his time at Paris Saint-Germain. Joane will strengthen our squad and play an important role for us right from the start of the new season.
“We are convinced of his qualities and see enormous potential for his sporting development.”
Standing at 1.95 metres tall, Gadou emerged through the PSG youth academy and helped the club’s Under-19 side win the French championship in 2024.
Later that year, he moved to Salzburg, where his progress accelerated quickly.
Although initially joining the Austrian club from youth football, he rapidly established himself within the senior structure.
Gadou made 58 competitive appearances for Salzburg’s first team, while also featuring five times in the UEFA Youth League and once for reserve side FC Liefering in the Austrian second division.
His performances in Austria appear to have convinced Dortmund that he is ready for the next stage of his career.
Gadou himself expressed excitement about the transfer and the opportunity to join one of Europe’s most recognised clubs for youth development.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining the BVB family and can’t wait to pull on the Black & Yellow shirt for the first time. I want to achieve success in the coming years together with my teammates, the whole club and our incredible fans.”
At international level, Gadou has represented France regularly in youth football since 2022.
He was part of the France side that finished runners-up at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2023 and later captained the French Under-17 team during the same competition in 2024.
He also helped France win the 2023 Lafarge Foot Avenir tournament in Limoges with the Under-18 side.
For Ivory Coast, Gadou’s rise will also attract significant attention given his heritage and his growing profile in European football.
African nations have increasingly produced elite young defenders in recent years, and Gadou’s transfer to Dortmund further highlights the continent’s influence on the global talent pipeline.
