Vallecano face losing Ghana’s Mumin for nothing in summer

Ghana international Abdul Mumin is edging closer to leaving Spanish side Rayo Vallecano on a free transfer after rejecting the club’s latest contract renewal proposal, according to reports.

The 27-year-old defender is approaching the final weeks of his current deal, which expires on 30 June 2026, and negotiations over an extension have failed to produce an agreement.

Rayo Vallecano recently submitted a reduced renewal offer to the centre-back, but the proposal was turned down, leaving the player free to consider alternatives elsewhere.

With no breakthrough in talks, interest in the Ghanaian has begun to intensify both in Spain and abroad. La Liga clubs Osasuna and Girona are among the teams closely monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of next season.

Sides from the English Premier League and France’s Ligue 1 are also said to be following developments. Mumin’s experience in Spain’s top division, combined with the possibility of signing him without a transfer fee, has made him an attractive option for several clubs.

The uncertainty surrounding his future comes after a difficult period in the defender’s career. In March 2025, Mumin suffered a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for more than 400 days.

The injury interrupted what had been a strong spell with the Madrid-based club, where he had established himself as a regular starter in defence.

He eventually returned to action in April 2026, making a substitute appearance against Espanyol in what marked a significant comeback after a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Mumin joined Rayo Vallecano in 2022 from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães and quickly became an important figure in the team. Known for his physical approach and consistency at the back, he earned praise for his defensive reliability before being sidelined by injury.

For Rayo Vallecano, the prospect of losing the player without receiving a transfer fee would represent a major setback. The club invested in his development after bringing him from Portugal and had hoped to secure his future with a new agreement.

Instead, the latest rejection has increased the likelihood that Mumin could leave once his contract expires at the end of June.

The defender is now weighing up his next move as interest continues to grow. Remaining in La Liga remains a possibility, particularly with Osasuna and Girona reportedly keen on signing him, although opportunities outside Spain are also under consideration.

Any decision is expected to depend on several factors, including the sporting project offered by potential suitors, assurances over playing time, and the environment best suited to helping him rebuild momentum following his long injury absence.

Despite the uncertainty, Mumin’s recovery and return to action have already marked an important step in his career, and the coming weeks are likely to determine where the Ghanaian defender continues the next chapter of his professional journey.
