Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi is facing uncertainty over his involvement in Nigeria’s upcoming Unity Cup campaign after suffering a hamstring injury during his club’s Premier League meeting with Brentford on 18 April.
The Nigeria international has missed Fulham’s past three league fixtures following the injury, which forced him off before half-time after he appeared to pull up while pursuing a loose ball during the match.
Iwobi has now revealed that he is undergoing rehabilitation while waiting for medical scans that will determine the extent of the problem. His condition has raised concerns over whether he will be available for the Super Eagles when the Unity Cup begins later this month in London.
Speaking on the Alexander Yaa Digg podcast, the 29-year-old described how he has been attempting to remain active despite the setback.
“I’m just walking through my neighbourhoods, going through the shops… to get some blood flow and oxygen into the legs,” he said.
The midfielder explained that although he remains mobile, the injury is still causing discomfort.
“I’ve got a hamstring injury, so I’m going to keep on the move and get my steps in… I’ve got a scan soon, so I’m praying for a speedy recovery,” he stated.
Iwobi also admitted that the spell on the sidelines has presented a mental challenge, particularly because injuries have not been a frequent issue during his career.
“I’m just grateful that I don’t really get injured on a regular basis because it is mentally challenging,” he said.
His absence would represent a significant blow for both club and country given his importance to Fulham throughout the current campaign. The midfielder has been one of the London side’s most consistent performers this season, featuring in 27 Premier League matches.
Across those appearances, Iwobi has scored four goals and contributed three assists while playing 2,279 minutes in the league.
Fulham have had to cope without the Nigerian in recent weeks as he continues his recovery programme. The club is still waiting for further assessment results before determining how long he could remain unavailable.
For Nigeria, the timing of the injury is particularly concerning ahead of the Unity Cup, which is scheduled to take place in London from 26 to 30 May. The competition is expected to provide the Super Eagles with an opportunity to prepare and strengthen combinations within the squad, making the possible loss of one of their most experienced midfielders a setback.
Iwobi has remained a key figure for Nigeria in recent years due to his versatility and attacking contribution from midfield. His fitness will therefore be closely monitored in the coming days as medical staff assess whether he can recover in time for the tournament.
The midfielder, however, remains hopeful that the injury will not keep him out for an extended period, with scans expected to provide a clearer picture of his recovery timeline.
