Michael Carrick praises Amad amid Sunderland return rumours

Michael Carrick has attempted to ease growing speculation surrounding the future of Amad Diallo, insisting the young winger remains focused and motivated despite increasing reports linking him with a return to Sunderland AFC.

The Manchester United attacker has once again become the subject of transfer discussion ahead of the summer window, with Sunderland reportedly interested in bringing him back to the Stadium of Light following his successful loan spell at the club.

Amad previously enjoyed a standout campaign on Wearside during the 2022–23 season, scoring 14 goals and playing a major role in Sunderland’s push for promotion from the Championship.

Although Sunderland ultimately fell short after losing to Luton Town FC in the play-off semi-finals, the winger’s performances left a lasting impression on supporters and club officials alike.

Now, ahead of a reunion with his former side this weekend, attention has once again turned toward the 23-year-old’s long-term future at Manchester United FC.

Speaking before the fixture, Carrick sought to shift the focus away from transfer speculation and instead highlighted the winger’s mentality, professionalism and quality since returning from injury.

“He’s got nothing to feel down about or upset about and frustrated about because he’s got so much to look forward to and he’s so talented and so exciting and absolute joy to work with,” Carrick said.

The interim Manchester United manager also praised Amad’s attitude in training and his commitment on the pitch, suggesting the winger continues to make an important contribution within the squad.

Carrick’s comments come amid reports that Sunderland are preparing to explore the possibility of another move for the player, having remained admirers of his development since his previous loan spell.

Amad’s ability to combine creativity, pace and work rate made him one of the Championship’s standout attacking players during his time at Sunderland, and his popularity among supporters has endured despite his return to Manchester United.

The speculation has intensified ahead of the summer transfer window, particularly with questions continuing over how regularly the winger will feature at Old Trafford moving forward.

Manchester United, however, have already secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, potentially giving Carrick greater flexibility to rotate his squad during the closing stages of the campaign.

That could provide Amad with an opportunity to feature prominently against his former club, adding another layer of intrigue to the fixture.

While Sunderland’s interest remains evident, Carrick’s public backing appears designed to reassure both the player and supporters that the winger remains highly valued within the Manchester United setup.

The manager’s praise also reflects the belief that Amad still has significant potential to fulfil at the highest level.

For the player himself, the coming months could prove decisive. After overcoming injury setbacks and continuing his development, Amad now faces another important stage in his career as speculation over his future continues to grow.

Whether he remains at Manchester United or becomes the subject of renewed transfer negotiations, his performances and progress have ensured he remains firmly in the spotlight ahead of the summer window.
