Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are monitoring Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal, but the Catalan club are not prepared to sell the 19-year-old unless he asks to leave.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola wants to sign Bernal and bring him to Anfield during the summer transfer window.
Bernal came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before establishing himself in the first team. The Spain international has a contract with the club until the summer of 2029.
He has scored five goals and provided three assists in 44 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions so far in his career.
Spanish journalist Juan Jesus says Liverpool are interested in signing Bernal in 2027, although the midfielder is also being closely watched by Atletico Madrid.
“Bernal is attracting interest from many clubs. Liverpool and Atletico Madrid are monitoring him closely, with Diego Simeone and Andoni Iraola both strong admirers of his ability and qualities,” Jesus wrote on X.
The journalist added: “The player wants to convince Flick, but his playing time will be assessed in June. With players such as Pedri, Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Rodri considered untouchable, Bernal is not the coach’s first choice.”
Bernal’s position within the squad could therefore determine whether he remains at Barcelona or considers a move elsewhere.
“If he is not satisfied with his role, a permanent transfer is very likely to become an option, rather than simply a loan,” Jesus said. “Barcelona do not want to sell him, unless the player himself asks to leave.”
The midfielder’s current contract means Barcelona remain in a strong position, but his future is expected to depend on the role he is given and the amount of football he plays.
Liverpool already have a Barcelona player in their squad this season, with defender Ronald Araujo currently at the club on loan.
