Nigerian duo help FC Porto secure 31st league crown

FC Porto have secured the Liga Portugal title after a narrow victory over Alverca, with Nigerian players Zaidu Sanusi and Terem Moffi both part of the championship-winning squad.

The 1-0 win at the Estádio do Dragão on Saturday ensured Porto clinched the league with two games still remaining in the season, underlining their dominance in the current campaign.

The triumph marks Porto’s 31st Liga Portugal title, reinforcing their status as one of the most successful clubs in Portuguese football. Only Benfica, with 38 league titles, have won more.

Porto’s success this season has been built on remarkable consistency. The side have recorded 27 wins from 32 matches and have suffered just a single defeat, a run that has set them apart from their domestic rivals and allowed them to seal the title early.

For Nigerian international Zaidu Sanusi, the victory represents his second league title with Porto, having previously been part of the squad that won the championship in the 2021/22 season. Although not a regular starter throughout the campaign, Sanusi has contributed when called upon. The left-back has featured in 17 league matches, scoring once and providing an assist.

Terem Moffi, meanwhile, celebrates his first major honour with the club. The striker only joined Porto on loan in January from French side OGC Nice, but has played a supporting role in the team’s title charge. In nine league appearances, Moffi has registered one goal and one assist.

Despite limited appearances compared to some of his teammates, Moffi’s contributions have added depth to Porto’s attacking options during the second half of the season. His arrival helped strengthen the squad as they pushed towards securing the title.

It remains uncertain whether Porto will move to make Moffi’s loan deal permanent at the end of the campaign. However, the 26-year-old will have the opportunity to celebrate a significant milestone in his career, having now won his first major trophy in European football.

Porto’s latest title success further cements their place among the elite clubs in Portugal. With two matches still to play, attention may now turn to finishing the season strongly and building momentum for future competitions.

For both Sanusi and Moffi, the title represents an important achievement, highlighting the growing influence of Nigerian players in European leagues and adding another chapter to their professional careers.
