London City Lionesses moved on to 12 points from their opening five Women’s Super League matches after overwhelming Tottenham 6-1 at Brisbane Road.
Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani both scored twice, while Danielle van de Donk and Delphine Cascarino were also on target in a dominant display from Eder Maestre’s side.
London City had established a 3-0 lead by half-time. Putellas opened the scoring in the third minute and added her second in the 34th, following the Spain captain’s first WSL goal in last week’s 2-0 victory over Brighton.
Putellas has now been involved in 49 goals across her last 50 starts for club and country. She has scored 28 goals and supplied 21 assists for London City, Barcelona and Spain during that run.
Maestre said the scale of the victory could have a significant effect on the club, although he stressed that London City must remain grounded despite their strong start.
“The three points are the same as you can have in every game, but this kind of win can be a game-changer, in terms of showing everyone that we are pushing hard,” said Maestre.
“But, at the same time, we need to be humble as well. The teams that are used to being there and occupying these places [at the top] are still there.
“I’m so happy we’re hitting our targets. When you have these kinds of players it is about trying to find chemistry and it takes time.
“It’s a process, and we’re in the process of building something strong.”
Tottenham had taken 10 points from their first four matches of the 2026-27 season but suffered a heavy setback against a London City team that punished a sharp decline in the hosts’ performance.
Spurs manager Martin Ho accepted responsibility for the result and said there could be no justification for the way his players performed.
“Really poor, not acceptable from us as a group. Defensively, we didn’t win the first ball or the second ball. In duels, we were poor. We have to move on,” Ho said.
“The team collectively needs to own that and we will, and that starts with me, I take responsibility for it.
“We were just not at it, but that can’t be the level. Everyone will be disappointed – that was not the level we expect. We conceded six goals and you don’t want to be doing that.”
Brighton and Chelsea claim convincing wins
Brighton also recorded a resounding victory in Sunday’s other early matches, beating pointless Charlton Athletic 5-1.
Chelsea defeated London rivals West Ham 3-0, with Melvine Malard breaking the deadlock in the 38th minute. Kiera Walsh and Maika Hamano then scored late goals to secure the points for Sonia Bompastor’s side.
Everton beat Birmingham City 2-1, while Aston Villa and Crystal Palace drew 1-1.
