Adli apologises and reopens door to Algeria national team

Midfielder Yacine Adli has issued a public apology to Algerian supporters, expressing regret over previous remarks in which he prioritised representing France over Algeria national football team.

The 25-year-old acknowledged that his earlier statements caused widespread anger among fans and insisted he now holds a different perspective, while indicating a willingness to represent Algeria in the future.

Regret over past comments

Adli’s earlier position, in which he stated his ambition was to “play at the highest level and defend the colors of the French national team,” had drawn strong criticism in Algeria, with many supporters calling for him to be excluded from consideration.

In a recent interview, he revisited those comments and admitted fault, saying: “I was arrogant and I admit that I made a grave mistake. In all areas of life there are opinions and positions that change, sometimes you are convinced of something and the next day the opposite happens.”

He stressed that his intentions at the time were not to disrespect Algeria, despite the perception among supporters.

“I was very frank and honest in what I said at the time. I said that I am a player who aspires to play at the highest level and my goal is to play with the French national team, but without diminishing the value of the Algerian national team.”

Reflection on missed opportunity

Adli acknowledged that his stance may have cost him the chance to represent the country of his heritage.

“In the end, what I said did not serve me and was of no use, but rather deprived me of one of my original rights (to play with Algeria).”

He also described the emotional impact of the backlash he received, noting that it affected him personally.

“It was said that I did not respect Algeria and I was subjected to a lot of insults. I was very affected by that because it is not true what I think about my country of origin, and it is not the relationship I want with people.”

Previous contact with national team

Adli revealed that his only formal interaction regarding a potential call-up came through former Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi.

“I did not communicate with the Algerian Football Federation directly. The first contact was with Djamel Belmadi during my first year with AC Milan, and that was, I think, in 2022.”

He added that, at the time, his focus was on establishing himself at club level.

“From Belmadi’s side, things were clear. He presented his project to me very clearly. His goal was for me to join the Algerian national team, but at that time I had just arrived at AC Milan and I wasn’t participating much. I had to secure my place first and participate in matches, and that was a legitimate thing to do.”

Renewed openness, but cautious timing

Despite expressing a desire to represent Algeria, Adli made clear that he does not want to create unnecessary distraction ahead of major competitions.

“I do not want to be a source of controversy again regarding the Algerian national team because of this interview.”

He emphasised that his priority is to support the team, particularly with the World Cup approaching.

“The most important thing is for the players to focus on their participation in the World Cup, and I will be the first fan of the Algerian national team, and I may travel to the United States of America to support them from the stadium this summer.”

Decision rests with authorities

Adli acknowledged that any potential inclusion in the national team remains beyond his control, placing responsibility with the coaching staff and federation.

“I may be a player who can contribute to the Algerian national team, but of course this decision is in the hands of the coach and the Algerian Football Federation.”

He also confirmed recent contact with current coach Vladimir Petković, describing their exchange as open and honest.

“Petkovic was my coach at Bordeaux. We spoke recently via a normal telephone call and I was honest with him. I don’t want to be a source of controversy again.”

A career at a crossroads

Adli’s club career has seen fluctuations, from early promise to a more uncertain period following his time with AC Milan, before moving to Saudi side Al-Shabab.

Now, with a public apology issued and his stance clarified, the midfielder appears to be seeking a new chapter—one that could yet include representing Algeria, should the opportunity arise.
